A safe place for self-reflection

Our mission is your safety, empowerment and growth.

Multicultural Psychotherapy Associates is an affiliation of mental health professionals, founded in 1991. We are dedicated to broadening the understanding and practice of mental health in an increasingly multicultural society and inter-connected world.

We aim to provide a safe place for self-reflection and healing for people undergoing life transitions, affected by trauma or experiencing emotional distress. Our goal is to restore people's sense of well-being and connectedness, and to inspire mental health practitioners to broaden and deepen their understanding of cultures different from their own.

To fulfill our mission we:

  • Provide a safe and confidential place for everyone. Our therapists and counselors are multicultural and multilingual, with services for native English, Spanish, Portuguese and French speakers. We are trained to help recent immigrants, school-age children, adolescents, couples and young and mature adults.
  • Empower individuals, couples, families, and communities to take charge of their own mental health and well-being by providing new tools and skills, resources and services for healing. Our practice is based on various traditional and non-traditional psychotherapeutic models. All treatment plans are discussed before beginning therapy to ensure complete care and safety.

To improve our community and intercultural understanding, we also provide training and supervision to mental health professionals. By providing information, perspective and training, we strive to prepare mental health practitioners to participate in transforming the inner and private lives of our clients. We strongly believe that information technology can be used to help us achieve our mission, but that it can not replace the bonds created in therapy between clients and their therapists.

A devoted and knowledgeable therapist

"One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious."
-Carl G. Jung

Dr. Carmen Gonzalez has devoted herself to creating and developing a new model for understanding mental health in the 21st century with depth psychology and the work of pioneer psychologist Carl Jung as her foundation.

Her aim is to enhance people's self-knowledge across cultures, and to support them in their process of what Jung calls Individuation, or becoming whole. To explore this model, she has worked with people from sometimes traditionally-underserved cultures and continues to focus on inspiring and educating mental health practitioners about the importance of culture in therapy.

By working with dreams, sandplay therapy, folk stories, hypnosis and active imagination to access the unconscious, Dr. Gonzalez has developed her empathy, warmth, and wisdom and earned the deep respect of her patients.

She is vastly experienced in depth psychology and other approaches, including cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic interventions. Specializing in the treatment of psychological trauma survivors, cross-cultural issues and sexual abuse evaluations, Dr. Gonzalez works with couples, children, adults and leads dream groups.

Committed to her personal and professional growth, she is a life-long learner. Trilingual and the mother of two, Dr. Gonzalez earned her Doctorate from Harvard University. In 2000, she received the Peace and Justice Award from the Cambridge Peace Commission, in Cambridge Massachusetts.
